our schoolEmails from a school in Ukraine

We are from Melitopol. Melitopol is situated in the southeast of Ukraine, not far from the Sea of Azov. It is neither large nor small. Melitopol is located in the steppe zone. It stands on the picturesque banks of Molochnaya River. Our city is green and beautiful. Our region is famous for its historical places. In our region, Cossacks movement began in the 15th century. It's a glorious page of our history.

Our gymnasium is a specialized educational establishment that gives an advanced secondary education to pupils from the age of 10 through to 17. It is not a big educational establishment. It has 46 persons of the teaching staff and 561 pupils (5th to 11th). Our curriculum is based on the profound studying of Mathematics and the Humanities. Our gymnasium follows main tendencies and trends in modern educational process. All our efforts are aimed at the upbringing of a many-sided developed personality and enrichment of his inner spiritual culture. We are experiencing new methods and models of work and pay much attention to the Humanities, especially foreign languages. The two foreign languages English and German are taught in our gymnasium.

Class email from Melitopol

Hi. Our school began in 1957 as a secondary school. Now it is gymnasium. Our school works in two shifts. We start school at 1:30 and we come home at 8 o'clock in the evening. We have 6 or 7 lessons every day. We don't go to school on Saturday and Sunday. But on Saturday we have our Psychology Club and Puppet Theater Club. We like our Puppet Theatre very much and we prepare interesting puppet plays for our parents.

We study Maths (it's our main subject and we like it very much), Ukrainian Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, English, Geography, Biology, History, Computer Sciences, Music, Art, Handicraft and P.E. We have different teachers for different subjects. We have Maths 5 times a week, English - 3 times a week, and Computer Sciences only once a week.

Our lessons last 45 minutes and we have short breaks for 10 or 20 minutes. We can go to our school cafeteria after the second lesson. We can eat salads, vegetables, cakes, milk or tea, juice or we can have the first and the second course. For the first course we usually take soup and for the second course potato with meat or fish and salad.

The after school activities (for us they are before school activities, because we have them before lessons) are Chorus, Dance Club, Sport Club (volleyball and basketball), Drama Club, Psychology Club and Puppet Theatre Club.

There are many good traditions in our school. Some of them are the holiday of the First Bell (The First of September), the Teacher's Day, the Holiday of the Last Bell (the last day of the school year).

We have the weeks of different subjects. Recently we've had Maths week and we had many different Maths competitions. We liked them very much and pupils from our class were the winners. We usually have English week in February and we have English competitions.

We also had many different trips and excursions. Around the town there are many archeological monuments dating back to the Bronze Age, one of the most interesting of which is called the Stone Grave, and is located 18 kilometers outside the town. Last year we visited The Stone Grave. It was a very interesting excursion and we learned a lot about the history of our region. We like different excursions very much. At the end of the school year we are going to visit the Crimea. (March 2006)
