FROM THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS TO THE DARWIN CENTRE
Charles Darwin brought back many specimens from his voyage on HMS Beagle (1831-1836). The Beagle visited a number of countries and islands including the
Cape Verde Islands,
Brazil,
Uruguay,
Argentina,
Falkland Islands,
Chile,
Peru,
Galapagos Islands (Ecuador),
Tahiti,
New Zealand,
Australia,
Mauritius and
South Africa.
The importance of observations made in the Galapagos Islands and Charles Darwin's publication of the theory of natural selection changed the way we see all living things.
The Darwin Centre in South Kensington, London, which adjoins the Natural History Museum, houses Darwin's specimens as well as many other preserved creatures, such as Archie, a giant squid (8.62 metres long) caught near the Falkland Islands in 2004.
