Geography
The Republic of Guinea is in Western Africa. It is bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Conakry is the capital city and an important port.

The terrain consists of coastal plain, and a hilly to mountainous interior. The Gambia, Niger and Senegal rivers originate in Guinea.

The climate of Guinea is mostly tropical, with the rainy season from April to November.

Environment
Parks in Guinea include Haut Niger National Park and the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve.

The Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is a transboundary reserve on the borders of Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia.

Animals found in Guinea are chimpanzees, hippopotamuses and hyenas.

Architecture
The architecture of Conakry reflects the French Colonial era, as well as investment from the Soviets (USSR) and the Chinese.

Traditional buildings include circular buildings with thatched roofs.

Population
The population of Guinea was estimated 10.5 million in 2016.

Languages
French is the official language in Guinea. Many of the population speak indigenous languages such as Susu, Pular and Malinke.

Religion
A large percentage of Guineans are Muslims. There are also Christians and followers of indigenous beliefs.

Food
Maize soup is a popular meal in Guinea. Rice, served with sauce and vegetables, is another staple food.

Groundnuts, okra, and tomatoes are often used in sauces. Fish and meat are sometimes added.

Local vegetables are aubergines, beans, cabbages, carrots, cassava, onions, peppers, plantains and yams. Millet and sorghum are also cultivated.

Fruits include apples, bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, guavas, mangoes, melons, oranges, papayas, pineapples and watermelons.

Coffee is grown in Guinea. Soft drinks and beer are produced locally.
