Geography
The Union of the Comoros is in the Indian Ocean. It consists of the islands of Grande Comore, Moheli and Anjouan. The archipelago is between northern Madagascar and Africa.

Moroni, on Grande Comore, is the capital. Mutsamudu, on Anjouan, is the second largest urban area.

The terrain of the islands is rugged and mountainous. Mount Karthala, a volcano, is at the highest point of the Comoros, at 2,361 m above sea level.

The climate of the Comoros is tropical marine.

Environment
Each of the islands of the Comoros has a protected area: Parc Naturel de Grande Comore, Parc Marin de Moheli and Parc Naturel d'Anjouan.

Animals in Comoros include rare and endangered lemurs, found only in the Comoros and neighbouring Madagascar.

A number of species of birds inhabit the islands, for example, the Anjouan brush-warbler, Anjouan sunbird and Comoro Blue Vanga.

A variety of waterbirds, especially grebes, can be found in Lake Dziani Boundouni on Moheli Island, listed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of Importance.

Turtles, whales and dolphins inhabit the sea surrounding the islands.

Architecture
Moroni is an old port town with buildings dating back to Swahili times. Islamic architecture includes numerous mosques and minarets.

There are a number of modern office blocks and government offices in the capital.

Population
The population of the Union of the Comoros was estimated at 821,625 in 2021.

Languages
Languages spoken in the Union of the Comoros are Shikomoro (a Swahili-Arabic dialect), Arabic and French.

Religion
A large percentage of the people are Sunni Muslims; there are some Roman Catholics.

Food
Rice is the staple food in Comoros. It is usually eaten with fish or meat sauce.

Fish is plentiful. Meat available includes chicken, goat and beef.

Coconut is used in some sauces. Pepper and spices such as cloves are grown.

Vegetables and fruits are cassava, sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes, plantains, bananas, citrus fruits, mangoes, papayas, passion fruit and pineapples.

Drinks include fruit juices and tea.
