Geography
The country of Antigua and Barbuda is in the Caribbean and consists of the islands of Antigua, Barbuda and Redonda.
Saint John's, in Antigua, is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda.
The islands are mainly composed of limestone and coral with some volcanic areas.
The climate of Antigua and Barbuda is tropical maritime.
Environment There are three National Parks in Antigua and Barbuda; each of these includes marine areas. Additionally, there are two Marine Parks, one off the coast of Antigua and the other off the coast of Barbuda.
The Frigate Bird Sanctuary, located on the Codrington Lagoon in Barbuda, has one of the world's largest colonies of the frigate bird.
Other birds found in Antigua and Barbuda include the Antillean Crested Hummingbird, the Bananaquit and the Lesser Antillean Bullfinch.
Architecture The National Parks of Antigua and Barbuda were established to preserve the country's historical sites.
Perhaps the most well known site is Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour. Buildings of interest include the Admiral's House, the Officers Quarters and the Copper and Lumber Store.
Fort Shirley, on a hill top (Shirley's Height), was the main fortification of the British troops. English Harbour was defended from Fort Berkeley, located strategically at the harbour's entrance.
Population The population of Antigua and Barbuda was estimated at 100,000 in 2018.
Languages English is the official language in Antigua and Barbuda. Local dialects are spoken.
Religion The people of Antigua and Barbuda are Christians; the majority are Protestant.
Food Popular dishes in Antigua and Barbuda include pepper pot stew (meat, okra, peppers, other vegetables and spices) and fungi (cornmeal and okra). Rotis, pancakes filled with curried meat and vegetables, are often eaten as a snack.
Shellfish and fish are caught daily and salt fish is used in various recipes.
Vegetables include dasheen, peppers, pumpkins and sweet potatoes. Breadfruit is also grown.
Fruits cultivated are bananas, coconuts, guavas, mangoes, papayas, pineapples and tamarinds.
Soursop fruit is used to make a milky juice and other juices are available. Alcoholic drinks, such as beer and rum, are brewed locally.
