Geography
The Republic of Ghana is in West Africa. It is bordered by Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Togo and the Atlantic Ocean.

Accra, on the coast, is the capital city. Other important places are Sekondi-Takoradi, Kumasi and Tamale.

The country is mainly flat with a hilly coastal plain. The highest point is Mount Afadjato. The River Volta is Ghana's longest river. The Akosombo hydroelectric dam, built in 1964, created Lake Volta, one of the world's largest artificial lakes.

Ghana's climate is tropical; it is drier in the north of the country.

Environment
Parks in Ghana include Ankasa National Park, Bia National Park, Bui National Park, Digya National Park, Mole National Park and Kakum National Park.

Bia, a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, is home to many primates.

Digya National Park is on the western shores of Lake Volta. The area surrounding the artificial lake has become home to much wildlife.

Kakum National Park has a canopy walkway. The walkway, made of wire ropes, ladders, planks and safety netting, provides access to the upper layers of the rainforest.

Architecture
Traditional Ashanti buildings were constructed with wattle and daub walls and palm roofs. Mosques were built with mud bricks and large mud columns to support the roofs.

The architectural legacy of European trade in Ghana can be seen in the Portuguese fortified trading posts along the coast and British Colonial buildings in Kumasi.

Population
Ghana's population was estimated at 25.5 million in 2016.

Languages
English is the official language. African languages include Ewe, Ga, Twi, Fanti, Dagbani, Nzima and Hausa.

Religion
Almost seventy percent of Ghanaians are Christians and around sixteen percent are Muslims. Some people follow indigenous beliefs.

Food
Soups and stews are an important part of the Ghanaian diet. A variety of meat is eaten with rice and vegetables. Fish and other seafoods are plentiful in the coastal waters.

Villagers keep livestock such as goats, chickens and ducks. Cassava, maize, plantains, yams and peanuts are grown. Other crops include aubergines, carrots, okra, onions, peppers, sweet potatoes, and squash.

Fruits available are bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, mangoes, papayas, pineapples and watermelons.
